[insert cheap attention-grabbing headline here] My best friend is called “Blow Job”

[insert cheap attention-grabbing blog entry here]

Job is a biblical name.

Blow job is not biblical, but it is a name.

This much was clear on Friday, when a buzz of excitement echoed of the corridors of my house (wooden floors + short corridor = lots of echoes), that my friend “blow job” was coming.

Poor Guthrie! Owing to the peculiar French inability to pronounce ‘Th’, French friends often find themselves reducing my friend’s name to “Gaterie”…

It’s all an unfortunate misunderstanding (just like in this video). While “faire une gaterie” might mean “make a cake”, that is not its only application – as this French newspaper article headline alludes.

But so what. The French too have names that sound perverse when said in English too. And while the name “Fanny” would likely raise only a smile outside of a private boys school, it would be still be perfectly reasonable to stifle a giggle if a friend ever proposed to you: “I’d like you to meet Aurelie”.
